If you’ve never booked a candid photography session before, it can feel a little uncertain at first. Most people are used to traditional photography where everyone stands still, looks at the camera, and tries to get everything “just right.”
My approach is very different.
As a Virginia Beach family photographer serving Hampton Roads, my sessions are built around movement, interaction, and real connection. Instead of focusing on perfect posing, I focus on documenting your family exactly as you are together in this season of life.
What “candid photography” actually means
Candid photography does not mean chaotic or unplanned. It means intentional observation instead of constant direction.
I will still guide you, but not in a stiff or overly posed way. I’ll give prompts like:
- walk together and talk
- play with your kids
- hold hands and move toward me
- snuggle in close and just exist together
The goal is to create space for real moments to happen naturally, rather than forcing them.
What your session will feel like...
Most families are surprised by how relaxed sessions actually feel.
At the beginning, there is usually a short warm-up period to help everyone get comfortable. Kids might be a little shy or energetic, and that is completely normal. I never expect immediate perfection.
Once everyone settles in, the session starts to feel more like spending time together than “taking photos.”
There is no pressure to perform. You do not need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. That is my job to guide you through in a very natural way.
How I work with kids during sessions
Kids are never expected to sit still or behave perfectly.
In fact, the most genuine photos usually come from letting them move freely. I use play, conversation, and simple prompts to keep them engaged without forcing anything.
Sometimes they run. Sometimes they get silly. Sometimes they need a break.
All of that is part of the process.
Parents often tell me afterward that they were worried about behavior beforehand, but end up realizing those “imperfect” moments were exactly what made the gallery feel real.
What you actually need to prepare
Not much.
The biggest things that help are:
- comfortable clothing you feel good in
- willingness to interact with your family
- letting go of the idea that everything has to be controlled
That’s it.
You do not need to rehearse anything or plan expressions or poses. The best photos come from simply being present.
Locations around Hampton Roads
Most sessions take place in natural outdoor settings across Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. These locations work so well because they give space for movement and natural interaction.
Some favorites include:
- beach access points in Virginia Beach
- Red Wing Park
- Oak Grove Lake Park
- open grassy areas with soft evening light
Each location offers something slightly different, but all of them support a relaxed and candid style of photography.
FAQ
Do I need to know how to pose?
No. I will guide you through everything naturally with movement-based prompts.
What if my kids do not cooperate?
That is completely expected. Sessions are designed to work with real behavior, not against it.
How long is a session?
Most family sessions are short and intentional, typically long enough to capture a full gallery without exhausting anyone.
